While in the Navy, "Jack" was Commanding Oficer of USS PT-109, an 80-foot ELCO type motor torpedo boat. On 2 August, 1943, it was rammed by a Japanese destroyer and sank, leaving 11 survivors. Lt. Kennedy received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his courage and leadership and the Purple Heart for injuries sustained.
Impeached by Congress for obstruction of justice in sex scandal, found not guilty.
Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1957 for “Profiles in Courageâ€.
