A state in northern India. Formerly called Uttaranchal from 2000 - 2006. Two of India's major rivers the Ganga and Yamuna have their headwaters in Uttaraklhand. In Sanskrit it means North Country or Section. Its northern boundary is in the Greater Himalaya range making it a very mountanous state. With its many religious shrines the state is known as "the abode of the gods." Religious tourism and adventure tourism are major industries.
