Atop a train engine was a relief valve consisting of a foot long tube, slotted on the sides, with a heavy ball in the center to hold the valve shut. When the train's steam pressure reached a certain point the ball would be pushed upward as the pressure was relieved. At high speed, when there was an abundance of steam pressure, the ball was held consistently at the top of it's container and thus a fast moving train was said to be "Highballing."
