Almon Strowger    invented    The Automatic Telephone Exchange (1839-1902), USA. In 1896 the first system, this time using a dial, was built by the Automatic Electric Company of Chicago, based on Strowger’s patents. It went into operation at the City Hall in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
