The BBC Sports Personality of the Year award is given to one sportsman or sportswoman, usually British, every year. The award was originally devised by the BBC producer Paul Fox in 1954 and continues to be organised annually by the BBC. The award is voted for by the general public towards the end of the calendar year, and is one of the most prestigious all-sport awards in British sport.
