Defeated 5 time champion Roger Federer 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (8-10), 9-7 to become only the second Spaniard in history to win the Men's Singles Championship. Manuel Santana was the first in 1966. Nadal is the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win both The French Open and Wimbledon in the same year.

The fifth set with a score of 16-14 was the longest fifth set in a Grand Slam men's final surpassing the 11-9 score in the 1927 French Open men's final. Roger won his 15th Grand Slam title passing Pete Sampras with the most mens Grand Slam wins in history.
