A khan controls a khanate (sometimes spelled chanat). Whenever appropriate as ruler of a monarchy, Khan is also translated, albeit incorrectly, as king or prince. Originally khans only headed relatively minor tribal entities, generally in or near the vast Eurasian steppe, the scene of an almost endless procession of nomadic people riding out into the history of the neighbouring sedentary regions, mainly Europe and the Far East. Some managed to establish principalities of some importance for a while, as their military might repeatedly proved a serious threat to such empires as China, Rome and Byzatium.
1265-1282 - Was in a civil war with the Golden Horde. 1425-1438 - Defeated the Oirats. 1325-1333 -Tarmashirin is famous for his campaign in India. He destroyed every army on his way to Delhi in 1327. The Delhi sultan gave him large tribute to spare his life. 1260-1266 - Controlled lands that were previously owned by the Blue Horde. 1284-1291 - A devout Buddhist, fought against Muslins in the Holy Land. 1335-1336 - Tried to overtake the Golden Horde. Failed. 1311-1320 - Introduced a civil examination system for public officals. 1227-1255 - Invaded Bolga Bulgaria. 1295 - Was executed after five months in power. 1357-1359 - His reign was marked by political murders and in 1359 he was poisoned. 1257-126 - Converted to Islam. 1370-1378 - Helped the Yuan Dynasty to be expelled from China to put in place the new Ming Dynasty. 1333-1334 - Overthrown by his cousin, Changshi. 1226-1242 - Appointed by Genghis Khan to oversee the execution of the Yassa. 1478-1516 - Restructured the Mongol Empire. 1415 - A pupped Khan throned by the Oirats as a direct decendent of Genghis Khan. 1287-1307 - Proposed a Mongol attack on India, but peace broke out instead. 1325 - Overthrown by his brother, Alladin Tarmashirin. 1392-1399 - Was defeated by the Oirats and was killed as a result. 1325 - Overthrown by his brother, Duwa Temur. 1392 - Made an alliance with Timur against the Ming Dynasty. 1309-1318 - Spent entire reign in conflicts with the Yuan Dynasty and the Il Khanate of Persia. 1291-1295 - Not a fighter - was addicted to wine, women and sodomy. Murdered. 1229-1241 - Was the Great Khan when the Mongol Empire reached its furthest extent west during the invasion of Europe. 1321-1323 - Empire was nearly bankrupt during this time. He was assassinated on the way to the Summer Palace. 1206-1227 - During his life, the Mongol Empire eventually occupied most of Asia. 1295-1304 - Khan of the Tartars, converted to Islam. 1400-1402 - Wanted to break the tradition of inter-family marriages. Was killed by Temur Khan. 1246-1248 - Grandson of Genghis. Pursued the war against the Song Dynasty of China. 1256-1265 - Destroyed Baghdad and Damascus. 1342-1357 - His assassination started 25 years of political turmoil. 1328-1329 - He ordered to compile an encyclopedia named Jingshi Dadian and devoted himself to Buddhism. 1361-1362 - Murdered by Timur Khwaja Kahn. 1329 -Was very popular with princes and officers of royality. Was poisoned. 1308-1311 - Great grandson of Kulbia Kahn. Strengthened the financial markets of Mongolia. 1280-1302 - Son of Kublai Khan. 1260-1294 - Founded the Yuan Dynasty which ruled over Mongolia and China Proper. 1402-1412 - Tried to replace the Mongal Khan with the Tartar Khan. War unsued and hundreds of thousands were killed, but the Mongols stayed in power. 1304-1316 - Born a Christian, converted to Buddhism then to Sunni Islam. 1475-1478 - Crowned Kahn after 9 years absence of a ruling Khan. 1266-1282 - Campaigned against Byzantium. 1251-1259 - Was famous for the campaign against the Kypchaks and Maghas, the destruction of Kiev and the assault of Hungary. 1465-1466 - Was killed by Mongol nobles. 1360-1361 - Murdered by Khidr Khan. 1226-1280 - Founded the White Horde. 1415-1425 - Was defeated by the Oirats. 1359-1360 - Murdered by his brother Mawruz Beg Khan. 1328 - No one really knows what happened to him. He disappeared. 1332 - Became Khan of Mongolia at the age of seven. Died two months afterwards. 1255-1266 - First Khan baptised as a Christian. 1287-1291 - Led the second invasion of Hungary. 1308-1309 -Destroyed the Punjab region as an act of retaliation. 1433-1452 - Tried to consolidate power with the Oirats. It didn't work. 1282-1284 - Tried to restrain the practice of Buddhism and Nestorianism. 1294-1307 - Grandson of Kublia Khan. Never engaged in war during his reign. 1362 - Murdered possibly by Abdallah and a few others. 1341-1342 - Murdered by his brother Jani Beg. 1291-1312 - Adopted Islam as a state religion and that started another war. 1377-1378 - Unified the White Horde and Blue Horde. 1282-1287 - Tried to keep peace with Kublai Khan. 1257 - Named Khan at the age of 10. Mysterously died shortly thereafter. 1374-1376 - Rebuilt Sygnak, the capital of the White Horde. 1378-1388 - Raided by members of the Ming Dynasty, he escaped to Karakorum only to be killed on the Tuul River. 1323-1328 - He did nothing significant during his five year reign, except have an irritatingly similar name to Yesun Temur - no mean achievement in itself. 1338-1342. Not to be confused with Yesün Temür, obviously.
