Good job juliet. Keep 'em coming.

Palladin you have bone and bone.[period] Others have periods too and when combined with answers that others contribute make for duplicate choices.

Okay, so why does the mumps virus affect the lymphatic system instead of the salivary glands as you corrected?

My understanding was that the virus that caused mumps affected the lymphatics. That was the primary focus of infection. The GI tract is loaded with lymphatics esp. the sallivary glands as antibodies and lymphocytes are secreted in saliva to give type A (humoral) immunity vs type b which is cellular. The primary organ of infection when you get the mumps is the salivary gland so I am wrong to say just lymphatics and so you and Juliet are both correct in that the infection does start in the salivary glands and it is the first foci of infection. The parotid salivary glands are part of the digestive tract, yes, and the first organ to suffer the effects of infection by the paramyxovirus.

safe to say mumps doesn't grossly present until partoid glands are involved? I think the answer should read 'lymphatic /salivary glands' -- please don't let my persistance and curiosity rub you the wrong way, Pall! If I were a cat, I'd been long dead.
Hey, thanks for Disease/Etiology! Can't wait!!!

Not at all Daft..not at all....LOL. Just trying to get it straight in my own mind. Just not jiving with what they taught us while in school but things may have changed. We don't deal with mumps per se although we do see bacterial infections of the salivary glands. Nope all is good, thanks for keeping me on my toes.
