Challenges are sent out automatically in groups at the times specified in the fixtures list.

The scores and fixtures are updated within ten minutes of any tournament game being completed. A tournament game is considered complete when all players have played or when the time allotted by Factacular for a challenge (48 hours) to be played has elapsed.

Scores are listed in the fixture table when challenges are complete. Any fixture with "P - P" displayed is still in progress. Clicking on either team name for a fixture will navigate to the challenge page for that fixture.

The next challenges go out today: 06 May 2008 13:00 GMT - like it says on the fixtures list. Sorry - I thought it was clear what the times on the fixture list meant.

The system will send two challenges per team every 14 hours. Why every 14 hours? Well, that's so all challenges get sent this week.

This way, challenges are sent regularly and everyone should know when to expect them. It saves situations like we've had in the past where everyone is kept waiting at the end of the week because one team hasn't sent out any challenges. It also means that nobody gets inundated with too many challenges at once (excepting, obviously, my "practice" runs that I so generously dole out).

Tue 6 May 08 #33

Well, this way you get to prepare for the next two challenges. You get to know who they'll be against and when they'll be - as opposed to being at the mercies of opposing captains who're sometimes less than prompt.

Meanwhile, the people who actually do the work to keep these tournaments running can put their feet up rather than having to chase around, inputting brainoff IDs, harrying captains to get challenges sent and so on.

If you fancy taking on that work next time so you can have the personal touch then I will gladly send you the application.

I've changed the application now so the fixtures list is automatically updated along with the scores.

So, as soon as the last player in a challenge plays (or rather, up to ten minutes after) the final scores for that challenge will be displayed in the fixtures list. Links to the new challenges will also be posted there as and when new challenges are sent out (or rather as and when give or take ten minutes).

Stu, my arithmethic skills are legend , however, I believe an error has been made in the score between the Vultures and the Dead Wabbits. Can you please check that. I have added it several times and come up with the same answer each time and it is not the score which is posted. The Rabbits score is correct but ours is not. Thanks, Stu.

Wed 7 May 08 #44
Doctor Factenstein

Quite right, wabzy.

The problem is in the detection of a complete challenge. In the past this was done by checking to see whether the page said that they were the final results. Nice and easy.

Unfortunately, as Tournament never plays a single question, the challenges remain active for 48 hours regardless of the numbers of "real" players who've participated. So, it wasn't really satisfactory to stick with the "Final results" approach because I know how impatient people are for results (rightly so).

So, I changed it to consider a challenge complete if all "real" participants had played. What I didn't consider was people who were "in progress" when the scores were checked. The score for your team obviously includes an "in progress" score.

Obviously, I'll address the problem and your score will be amended accordingly.

Thanks for spotting it and pointing it out.

Yes, that's right kristian.

If one of your team doesn't play then you only get the points for the three players who did play. The challenge is won by the team which scores the highest total score - not the team which has the highest average score.

(The reason for this is that if it were done on average then the first player in a team could score 2500 and the other players in the team then opt not to play)

Absolutely.

I've been in teams where team mates have missed challenges. It's frustrating but we're all human.

However, I don't think there's ever been a case in the team competition where someone has been replaced without their consent. Nobody has simply failed to show up and been moved aside - as far as I can remember.

People missing lots of challenges tends to happen more on the decathlon though - either because people don't show up in the first place or because people give up half way through. The decathlon is a solo effort, though, so it doesn't affect anyone else if someone drops out.

Once Count Factacular has had a chance to fix the problem I'll reset this morning's challenges so new ones get sent out.

Ok - it looks like the site is working properly again. I'll hack the tournament so the last batch of challenges get sent again.

Those aside, there's only been one casualty and that was Bowler's 0 score in the Celtic Tigers challenge to the Dead Rabbits.

I'm making the decision to send the last batch of challenges again because the Tournament system couldn't pick up the Brainoff IDs due to the problem. So that's a technical issue. The problem with Celtic Tigers v Dead Rabbits needs an executive decision from the tournament management.

Something IS STILL wrong. We beat the Gigglers, as the scoreboard indicates, and yet we were sent 3 challenges against them today, one of which resulted in all zeroes. Two were played which have scoring going on.

We defeated the Oompas once and were sent 2 challenges today. I didn't do any because I am not going to start one unless I know which is the zero one.

What's the deal with the Gigglers? I am not afraid of losing to them but it is sloppy and I am uncertain if Loris automatically gets a second chance or what. It would seem to me that once a score has been posted that isn't right. (Sorry, Loris. Just trying to figure this out. Nothing personal but you should have played the match.)

I am not playing the Oompas until I know which one will count. And can I please have an explanation of the Giggler situation? Thanks.....

the challange Stu sent to us to replace the one where Bowler didnt get any questions at all to answer only gave Conorc 2 questions to answer.

something s afoot stu....

That's just something that happens with Factacular from time to time. It's nothing to do with the tournament itself - it's Factacular. I can fix problems with the tournament system but not problems with the site itself. Whether that challenge gets replayed or not is an executive call - not mine.

Wabzy - the challenges listed in the Fixtures list are the challenges which go towards the scores. I don't know how you ended up with an extra one but I suspect that me fiddling around to give Bowler a rematch against the Tigers is probably at the root of things.

OK, Stu I can understand the vagaries of the site but what is supposed to happen now with all of these extra challenges being sent? I have no intention, nor do I think it proper to relinquish a win which occured before a glitch in the site. Agreed? Please advise.

Sorry wabzy but I'm not going to change anything now. It's manual edits to the system which most likely resulted in the duplicate challenge so I'd rather not repeat that risk.

The brainoff in the fixtures list, 26706, will stand as the second challenge between the Vultures and the Gigglers. Neither that challenge nor the other challenge (26697) is complete so you won't be relinquishing a win. You currently have one win (26667) over the Gigglers and that's not going anywhere.

For the record, in the challenge that has been discarded from the system, you have one player left to play needing 1088 for a Vulture win. The average player's score in that challenge is 1241. So, the last player has to score 153 less than the current average to win it for you.

In the challenge that replaced it, you have two players left to play needing a total of 1528, an average of 764 each. The average score for a player in that challenge currently is 1625. So, the last two players both have to score 861 less than the current average to win it for you or just one of your players needs to score 97 less than the average.

If anyone has cause to complain about which challenge gets discarded, it'd be the Gigglers because they've got better odds in the discarded one. Frankly, though, I reckon you're set to win both so it really is a moot point.

Stu, I am truly concerned about losing our victory over ther Oompahs. I don't see why two new challenges were posted to us for them. I am not giving up that ALREADY recocdred victory, which was dramatic and fine. I am sure you understand. So now what. I am not worried about the Gigglers except for the silliness of receivinfg three additional challenges when one would have been fine or two if we had been asked to allow Loris a chance to play, which we would have done.

What about the two challenges against the Oompas? A tough matxch for each team? Which match will count?

I am not picking on you , Stu, you have done a great job. I just am asking for a question or two to be answers. Thanks. I won't be playing untul later because i am barely awake. Take you time but assure me no posted scores will be removed.

If you look at the top post in this thread, there's all sorts of interesting and useful information under the fixtures table. This is one bit of it:
Scores are listed in the fixture table when challenges are complete. Any fixture with "P - P" displayed is still in progress. Clicking on either team name for a fixture will navigate to the challenge page for that fixture.

So, when I've been saying "The challenges in the fixtures list are the challenges that will count." I mean that the challenges that are linked in to the lines of the fixtures list are the ones that are being used for the tournament.

Kev and Loris, I am totally chilled, not angry at Stu and certainly not at you, Loris, I just had a few questions. That was all. I was only wondering why we had two challenges sent against the Oompas and an additional three against the Gigglers! That is not being crazy, is it? It is just asking for an explanation. Loris, yes, it is certainly for fun, but this is a contest and there are some rules and I just wanted to know what they were. There is no animosity agaist you at all! Silly Loris!

As an innocent bystander here I will offer my two cents. I do not think replays should be given. It is a contest with rules and when play begins everyone knows them (or should know them) and changing things around simply isn't fair. daft, as much as I empathize with you and conor I have to agree with Tushsers. Of course, it it only my humble opinion. Stu did say that once a score is on the scoreboard it will not be removed.

just so there is no misunderstandings Daft, it is not that I or we as a team are unwilling to replay, if you read above i agreed a replay on good well in another match, I just feel a wee bit too much has gone wrong, with this tournament, and it should be left to play if it isnt broken as the last time there was interference things went tits up....

Hey wabzy - can you do me a favour?

Try not to exagerate any issues that may have cropped up, eh?

You did not receive an additional three challenges against the Gigglers. There was just one extra challenge.

If you've got an issue then I'll deal with it - but don't try to make out that there's more of a problem than there is because I check up one what's going on.

No, wabzy, I'm not wrong.

This is the list of challenges sent by Tournament to the Vultures and the Gigglers.

One additional one sent because the Dead Rabbits were missed
The first one in the fixture list
One where everyone scored zero
One challenge mistakenly replayed
The second one in the fixture list

So, you had three in one day - the brainoffs in red - not three additional challenges.

Even if you count the one where you scored zeroes, that's just two additional challenge to the Gigglers. Except, I think it would be a little churlish to complain about the challenge where the site was broken and everyone scored zero as an additional challenge given that it was intentionally replayed.

Hence why I asked you not to exaggerate.

It's not a matter of believing you wabzy. I've logged in to the Tournament account and checked for every challenge sent to you and the Gigglers. That's all there is.

This is my last comment on this Lilliputian conversayion: You , yourself, have indicated that 3 (three) were sent to be played and you only neglect to say one was already taken care of, played and on the scoreboard. Get off my back. Go pick on someone else. I am beginning to think you have some kind of real problem, Capt. Queeg. Do you know that I get emails asking me why "is Stu so mean to " you? Do you like that reputation? "Why is Stu so harsh with you?" another asks. I do not know. In the future please confine yopur attacks on me to PM. I am embarassed for you, Stu. I truly am. If I were you I would be erasing these posts as quickly as I could. You are a real piece of work. I am still trying to figure out why you are always so anxious for a fight. I am not looking for trouble at all. I did state the facts you just repeated. Now, cut it, eh? This is a hell of a load of crap for me to wake up to in the morning.

I have just one question for you, Stu.....do you ever have fun? Do you ever have a good laugh, a real belly roller? have you ever just overlooked a minor thing and said eff it? I sure hope so. If you haven't life will be very hard for you.

In the future address me in private mail. No need to make yourself look like a petty arse in front of everyone. Thanks. Have a great day.

Mean? Harsh? The only personal attacks going on in here are coming from you wabzy.

I'm simply asking for problems to be reported and not exaggerated. You exaggerated the situation with the Gigglers and I asked you not to do so. I look into problems that people report - regardless of how small those complaints may be - to ensure that the tournament runs smoothly and fairly. That way, issues like the one you reported with an incorrect score get fixed.

If people exaggerate problems then I spend time trying to track down issues which don't exist. I don't think it's too much to ask to request that you state the facts of a problem clearly so I don't waste my time.

You brought up the issue of additional challenges here so I responded here.

Send PMs unless it makes you feel terribly important to attack me in public. Knock it off for once and for all. I am not even angry at you right now, Stu. It is not hate. It is pity of sorts. Let the matter go. You are looking quite foolish.

Allan, you are a truly kind human being and sadly there are fewer of those in the world today.

Yes Maureen ~ I had to figure the rankings by golf standards! Glitter and cookies should belong to all of those who participated and double that amount to all those who set the entire week up!!! Again, many thanks!

Wicksie, you really have no idea of just how wonderful Allan really is! He is a truly wonderful man and he is so gifted in knowing songs and poems! He's a great person to have as a friend.

Wabzy and wicksie you are both making me blush! I love you both as good friends and I am glad to be an encourager whenever I can be to each of you. May I say in reply it is a pleasure to know such fine ladies as you among the many other fine ladies on my team and throughout Factacular.

When I first met you both here at Factacular you mentioned that you were childhood friends. I have a friend named Pat and he and I have been friends since 2nd grade. It is nice to have friends who can remember things that no one else remembers and you can talk to about a variety of things. New friends and old friends are very valuable in their unique way. Thanks for being so sharing and caring as friends to me.

We are ALL friends, Allan! That's what is so nice. By the way, I love the way you are featuring someone new each day. Terrific idea!

Thanks. I am checking "On This Day" at the New York Times and then searching for their picture at Google Images.
