Anyway, back to the Kevvie. Interesting start to the competition with a wide range of difficulty in the challenges. I've managed to score both under 1000 and over 2000 in my challenges so far. Good to see a bit of friendly banter going on in the challenge forums as well, makes it more fun.

Now that I've posted here I should be able to keep on top of things a little better and not be such an anti-social wench! Come on you Wallflowers!!! :)

I would like to thank Tob and Egg for their determination and commitment to the team during this competition.

We had a simple goal in the end: we tried not to finish last as we only had 3 players through out. the results will remain to be seen. I dont think we managed it tho.. :(

I think in all fairness, for each brainoff, your three scores should be averaged, and then the average should be multiplied by four to project what your team total would have been had you had all of your players. Then I'm sure your results would have been better.

Just as a "what if".

I think that if you sign up for a tournament and then don't participate, you need to show us a doctor's note, or a note from a priest, minister, rabbi, mayor, governor, prime minister, queen, sultan, emir, wizard, necromancer, oracle, demigod...

We all, of course, are remembering the more mundane reasons why a participant might not be able to continue, aren't we?

I know if a team member doesn't participate, it is very annoying, but if the disappearance is sudden (which this one seemed to be), that might indicate her internet connection is non-existent or broken for some reason.

Service provider technical difficulties, outstanding bill overlooked, family or friends fooling with internet settings, service provider no longer in business.......anyone of those might be a valid reason.

Just sayin', is all.

Unfortunately any changes like that have to be made manually as the program is not designed to cope with them. This involves a lot of extra work from those running the tournament. It is also often hard to determine during a tournament the reason for a no-show. An unofficial revised score can be given at the end at the discretion of the organisers, but it would have to be unofficial.

On another note, redhead69 had advised us that she would be leaving for vacation before the last challenge was to be received and she still wanted to finish for the GloWorms. She played a challenge with Kev and I and her score of 747 will be added to the GloWorms final score which will be posted here in a comment box.

The final decision is Sir Kevington's, but I am in favour of a contingency plan to be applied in the case of one or more team members dropping out for any reason at all.

I would like to add the following conditions:

1. If in future a team member drops out, then NO derogatory remarks or inferences are to be posted in their absence......unless, of course, they say "screw my team! I'm out!".........in which case, go for it.

2. The space is given for contrite apology for such members if that be the case.......and the assumption is accepted by ALL of us that their reason is the ONLY reason.

3. Any mathematical score adjustment is relative to formula vetted ONLY by DiscoStu......at this stage, he's the only one I trust in that regard.

Just a suggestion folks.

"NO derogatory remarks" !!! bugger !!
"contrite apology" ?? nope , lost me there.
"formula vetted ONLY by DiscoStu" i think I can divide by 3 and multiply by 4 but I know what you mean.

As well as the baby , we did have one occasion when someones house burnt down. I thought long and hard before I allowed them another go.

Holidays are OK so long as we are informed in advance. Other than that an unofficial table is best we can do because of the huge amount of programming that needs to be done in the event of a no-show. I don't do the programming and even I realise that it is not a feasible option.

Perhaps taking the average of all players in the tournament and using that as the basis for the missing player's score would be more fair? Certainly nothing is really "fair" as a solution, but this would, at least, provide some relief for a stricken team. Hey! We had a lot of fun and worked harder at it because of the missing player, so we haven't lost anything! Thanks to my team mates for a great tournament!

It would be good to have a Sub, whom can fill in if someone fails to show, however there is several problems with this, 1. the programmes cant manage it, and 2. the sub wouldnt get the same questions as the rest of the group.

I think possums idea is the best, this is only for fun after all and not serious, and just for curiosity, when someone fails to show take the average and give an unofficial result that way....

personally iam just keen to know where we would of come, and individual list of scores would show how each player did outside the team....

jamxg you need to lighten up a bit and not lay down laws, no one has said one single bad word about Tabby, except enquire about where she is. and surmise as to what may be wrong. your posts suggest otherwise and offensive, as you imply that people are horrible and bad mouth others without knowing the facts. when in this case nothing has been said.

as i said this is for fun. not one member of my team has said a thing.

Careful jackson - you might bring on some coughing (;>)

Whilst I can understand the debate about "what ifs", by the end of next week this will all be history and we'll be contemplating the Decathlon and other more important things in the real world. I think it is fair to say that the Celtic Connections would probably have beaten the Lizards once in this tournament, and possibly twice, and there are likely to be other games where they would also have won if they had had their full team out. Looks like a top half performance at first sight. Similarly, we lost two games in the last Kevvie because of a virus so it all levels out in the end.

If we start introducing extra rules to cover full no-shows, or partial no-shows, then we will also be introducing the tactical no-show in order to bag the "average" number of points to win a brainoff (the slippery slope to Formula 1 style rules!).

I propose we leave things as they are; the rules are the rules and we all knew them before we began. But, for interest and to recognise what looks like some strong performances from the three remaining Celtic Connections, would it be possible for someone to produce a table of individual scores or average scores by each team? Where is some1seyes when you need him?

I have an idea. How be you let things be and whoever is willing to be on a team with previous no-shows so be it.
Or, we could have people fill out applications and have them approved by various people as determined by a committee, place applicants into a team as determined by a committee selected by a vote of the former committee, and then have each tournament challenge supervised by members of a third committee made up by non-tournament playing members of the site who would be included in the challenge and then play if all eight people don't play by a time specified by a special time-supervising committee.
Of course, to get on a committee, you would have to apply and be approved by an oversight committee.
Also, I don't see why a team with a man down shouldn't get any U.S. Federal Bail-out funds.

Don't we need a committee to meet to commission a study on the practicalities of having all those committees?
I suppose a member that doesn't show is a toxic asset and therefore a team could get bailed out providing of course they could prove a shortage of intellectual capital.

I sympathise with team members when a fellow team member fails to show or has PC problems but that is the nature of the beast. I know of no sport or game where if an opponent or his team are given an average score based on other players efforts. I can see no logical solution and would urge that the team members left high and dry to accept their fate and if the team member has a reasonable excuse then they are invited back into the fold for the next tournament. If they do not have a good excuse then they are left teamless and before anyone says it I know proving the excuse is genuine may prove difficult. If only people entering challenges would remain honest the site would be a better place.

Thanks, Java and Kev. So, since The Flying Lizards and The Fantastic Four have tied, who is in first place? FF because they had a larger overall margin of victory, or FL, because they beat FF in both of their head-to-head challenges? Either way, great tournament, and thanks to all of the participants.

Celtic Connections, great job winning even two challenges, considering that you were at a 25% disadvantage each time!

I would like to commend Sir Kevvington on another excellent tournament!

The result was hairline close. Flyers? I am sure you are cued up to skewer us next time.

To my lady, I would like to offer another compliment on top of the intimacies we share. Your conduct of tournaments is continually exemplary and your example is unmistakable. The lowly profession of administration is allowed to shine under your careful jurisprudence. "Clockwork" is too lame a compliment. I prefer "laser sharp". :-)

To my competitors, thanks for the by-play and fun. That's what doing tournaments is all about.

To my fellow members.....Sue, Reed and Johnny.......three comps now and we're tight, we're slick, and we never lose sight of the aim......to have fun. It's a pleasure to be on your team.

Go 4!

Time to start counting down to the next Kevvie.......hey team, I think we are being targeted. Kewl!

Taking an average from Celtic Connections scores it is possible that they would have won a further 7 matches and finished 9 - 11 with 18 points.
It must be borne in mind ,however, that Tabbytoes was a new player and unlikely to match the more experienced members of the team.
This information is provided cos I'm bored and cos they were abandoned before a ball was bowled.
Points difference is the usual way of deciding leagues in England but if the head to head is used then............................
What happens if they win one game each ??

well in at least some games over here they use head to head & if they are tied in head to head they then defer to the pd for the decision. we're not playin for blood or money here & certainly your usual way of determining the winner is fine with me. guess i'm a little bored myself----yeah seems it would be difficult to determine which matches they would have won & thus who to deduct the points from that would have lost those matches. oh the possibilities are endless.

In the NFL (National American Football League), if there's a tie then they look at head to head, and if that's tied they look at how they did against common opponents, and if that's tied...I think they have about 10 levels to determine tie breakers.

You know if you guys have to have it this...you know, a win, in a competition designed to be a hard fought but friendly competition, than take the title.
For many a Kevvie, even before you folks got here and joined the site it was determined by wins and losses and in the event of a tie it was point differential.
The Fantastic Four doesn't have to win to have a good time playing, winning wasn't the object, having fun was and still will be if and when the Four play together. So if you really need to feel that your Kevvie isn't complete without declaring victory than please, take the title because what you are doing grows obnoxious and tiresome and not what I consider the spirit of what the Kevvie is all about. Hard fought, friendly competition within the spirit of the rules.
Congrats Flying Lizards...it is all yours.
