Fact Exact!
OK, anyone want to try something out? I retired the daily 'multiplay' brainoff in favour of a new section called Fact Exact, which picks ten subjects with > 200 facts for multiplay brainoffs each day.
Just to try it out. I'm sure it's a bit rough round the edges. Feedback welcome....
Things I'm vaguely thinking about it:
- maybe it should be a weekly tournament, with more subjects
- the subject selection could be improved to exclude the stupid subjects (or we should just delete them from the Factopedia)
- the navigation is better than it was, in that it takes you back to the scoreboard when you finish... but it could look nicer and it ought to show you that you've taken the lead
- it doesn't show your results any more, does that matter? (guess it should really)
- should you be able to see the scores on the subject before you play
- if you played a load of them then you'd get loads of emails (obviously a problem already)
Anyway I'm clearly just rambling now - I'll put this live on the site and we'll see how we go

Would be better if facts learnt over brainoffs can be counted as facts too...

Nice. Could it be limited to topics marked as suitable for randoms?

As Sally said... where do I find it or is it just the regular brainoff on a random factor?

I see no reason to limit the field to subjects marked random eligible as JMK wonders. The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned.

...and, although it's not the topic at hand...I just played a random where there were five out of ten on pop music...out of the whole vast factopedia! The random-eligibles are way too scewed toward pop music.

Just tried it. It is beyond great! But we need ALLl subjects of worth to be able to be played this way. It is a great way to remember facts and NO we shouldn't get points for facts we already know, nits! It is a terrific and fun way to keep current with facts we may have forgotten. If you need to learn the facts for points go learn them in Factopedia.
Is it okay that I ranted for you, Count? Would you like some more topics I think are ridiculous and should be reserved for the Jive only? I will happily oblige.

Correct me if I'm wrong SSG, but aren't all subjects of worth playable this way? Eventually.
It wouldn't make much sense to increase the number available each day. We need to keep the number relatively small because otherwise there'd be little competition.
As for there being too much music, I'll check into it. Obviously, there's a random factor at work and there are just a lot more pop music facts for it to work with. That's the essence of the issue but it may be possible to work around that.
I could, for example, try to prevent more than 3 facts from any 1 category (e.g. Music) from appearing in any single brainoff (or 6 for a 20 question brainoff etc).
Getting rid of pop music facts seems a little drastic, mind you. There are definitely more than a few subjects we could quite happily lose but if quality is kept I don't see any reason to ditch things purely on the grounds of quantity. There's got to be a better way of managing things than that.
Anyway, I'll have a chat with the Count.

You guys are all missing the important question. Which button rollover style do you prefer - the 'play again' button, or the 'invite friends' button?
(spot-the-difference clue... the 'play again' highlights the yellow in a different way)
If you're not sure, the correct answer is that the 'play again' one is better. imho.
Question selection... we've got this 'tags' thing that lets editors set up groups of subjects, we could create a tag for 'Fact Exact' and I could make it use that to choose its subjects? Then you lot can argue to your heart's content about which subjects are included and which aren't? (by the way, at the moment it's any subject with more than 100 facts)
Similarly for random brainoffs / daily brainoff, whatever if you like ...
There's still Doctor Fact's thing about making the question selection more even across categories in randoms, which is a good idea and was something I actually looked at doing when I set it up originally, but it turned out to be tricksy, or it would make it slower, or something - can't remember exactly, but there was something.

I agree with proofreader. I am just glad to have this feature. I am not complaining. As far as pop music goes I think there are, in general, far too many inane questions in that category which could bite the dust. Whatever happens, though, is fine. I'm happy. Hey! Do you think there could be a simple personal typing course incorporated? I could use it!

This is a great new feature Count, thank you!
The only change I would make would be to include a comments box at the bottom so that we can have a conversation.

Nemesis, the reason I took that out was because I thought it would be better to have immediate access to the scoreboard so you could play again ...
... but maybe it'd be better if the buttons at the top had 'play again' and 'scoreboard' and then the rest of the stuff below to be the same as normal brainoffs - the ranking table, the comments box etc ...
Might try that. Thanks
