Facta 30 Day Movie Challenge - Day 18
Day 18 – A movie that you wish more people would’ve seen
Hot Fuzz, 2007. Didn't do too well in the theaters here in the U.S., but I laughed so hard. Simon Pegg is wonderful in this movie as a 'by the book' officer.
And 2012. No I don't believe in the myth, but the movie had great special effects. The only problem I have with some action/adventure movies is that they tend to put in a love story in the mix. Don't mix romance with action/adventure or true story (Pearl Harbor, Titanic, etc.)

Whale Rider - Even though a lot of people did get to see it I think a lot of people outside New Zealand missed it. A beautiful, touching story.

Perfume - The Story of a Murderer
A brilliant and well made story of a young perfumier who attempts to make the ultimate scent, which he believes comes from a woman in the throes of death.
or
The Station Agent - another indie flick with great characters, witty script and a film with real heart about friendships between compelete opposites.

Pi
I'm still not sure whether I liked it but if I did then more people should've seen it. If I didn't...well...misery loves company.

Okay, now that is just begging for more explanation. Seeing as I haven't seen it, or even heard of it.
Although I can see why a mathematician would be attracted to the title.

Crikey. It's probably too early in the day to even attempt a synopsis of Pi but what the hell...
The story centres around a brilliant mathematician, Max, with a particular interest in number theory. During the course of the film, Max finds himself courted by two very different groups who are keen to harness his talents. One one side is a representative of Wall Street, who is eager to use Max's computer programmes to predict stock market movements. On the other side is a group of Hasidic Jews who believe that Max can help them to discover the secrets of the Torah.
The film follows his handling of both groups, along with his investigation of a 216 digit number which was printed out by his computer during a crash. More importantly, it follows his descent into obsession and where that leads.
It's the first film by Darren Aronofsky, who went on to get an Oscar nod for Black Swan. You could probably think of Black Swan as Pi with dancing - if you wanted a really, really superficial description.
I watched it when I shared a house with a mathematician friend. We both agreed that it was a brilliant film although neither of us could quite say whether we liked it. We also agreed that we had to see it again. It's been about 10 years now so I should probably make good on that.

"Citizen X"
A terrific film about the search for Andrei Chikatilo......and the absolutely dogged approach by a Russian forensics specialist who found himself in charge of the case unexpectedly when it was realised that nobody else was suitable.
After years of Communist Party interference, including taking Chikatilo in custody but then the Party ordering his release due to his party membership, the Chief Investigator (Stephen Rhea), with the help of a high ranking military liaison officer (Donald Sutherland), finally started to wear the interference down and start to close in on his man.
In a sequence where the investigator is informed, after years of nearly total professional isolation and obstruction, that police forces around the world were watching him keenly and using him as the model for investigations of this type, his emotional release is almost overwhelming.
Great cameo by Max Von Sydow as a psychological profiler too......he is just so dependable.
